Maternity sessions are the most unique and loving sessions that I have shot so far. Like this even tops weddings (for me, personally). These celebrate new life coming earth-side and you can see the love the soon-to-be parents have for the newest addition to their family. At first, I really didn’t have any idea of what prompts I would use for this kind of session but once my client’s and I got to the location everything just flowed perfectly.
For the best photos, make sure momma is in a dress that makes her feel beautiful and confident. Whether its flowy or tight, something that boosts a mommas confidence and lets her shine like the star she is will produce the most authentic photos. For second and third time parents, that same thing applies, but we also have the siblings in the photos! Sometimes siblings can be cranky, but that’s okay and I’ll show you some fun prompts below that will get the little ones giggling just long enough for you to snap a photo.
Ahhh! This one is so good! Have momma stand in the foreground, hands around her bump. Have her look at dad and son/daughter while dad is tossing him/her in the air. You’re guaranteed to have great results from this one simple prompt!
Have mom and dad give the sibling a swing! This is so fun for the little ones and you are able to grab some photos of them walking as well while the sibling is still giggling!
So, we’ve got a couple prompts for the kiddos guaranteed to make them smile. Let’s move on to some prompts for just mom and dad. These are so dang simple, but so stunning
At first, you might think these look awkward. But once you start your editing process its really comes to life. Have mom stand in front of dad, one hand placed below her bump and the other reaching up for dads face. It is so simple, yet so intimate. It’s definitely a top prompt in my book.
Have dad kiss mom’s hand. This one is seriously the cutest prompt ever. It is so easy and it’s a great way to warm your couple’s up for the more intimate photos to come!
Next up we have just some solo shots of mom! She has that pregnancy glow going on and she’s excited to meet her newest addition to the family! Make her feel gorgeous in these last few weeks of pregnancy with these three prompts! I mentioned the flowy dress earlier, here’s where it comes into play!
This one is easy! Have mom accentuate the bump, give the bump its moment and have her look at the bump.
Here’s the element that I love! The flowy dress. Have mom grab the dress at the sides and start spinning like Cinderella! Get some movement in those photos, they will always turn out to be stunning.
Give the bump a little bit of a show here. But the main focus is here looking back at her family smiling. I tell my clients to hype her up, give her compliments, make her laugh. This gives the authentic smiles, giggles, and really boosts momma’s confidence.
I’ll throw these last two in as little extras! If this session includes a sibling, you have got to get some photos of just mom and the older sibling!
Have dad stand behind you and make funny faces or funny noises to have the little one laugh while mom is give them a kiss on the cheek!
“Wanna go high” is what we called this one. Mom tossed the kiddo in the air a couple of times and it is just the sweetest photo. You should’ve seen the photo after this one!
